The weather has deteriorated, so we have decided in the interests of safety, to cancel the community carol singing tonight. In this situation, the new networks of communication like texting and facebook are especially helpful. Within minutes, we had the news out to numerous people. Hopefully, everone will find out before 6.30pm.

Hurrah for texting - I got the message by text and passed it on to someone else by text too.
Shame it was off, but it's a very cold and slippery night, so perhaps for the best.
I am baffled by the decision to call off a carol singing evening on perhaps the finest carol singing evening of the decade. I thought it was perfect. Fresh snow, clear skies and still conditions; they don't come any finer (and this the w/e before Christmas.) People even write carols in an attempt to conjure up an evening such as this!
Add to this the opportunity to engage with the wider community of Hilton, getting out in the fresh air and socialising with the rest of the church in a way that doesn't involve sitting in rows.
This was an opportunity missed.
Mea Culpa, Laurence! After the morning service, a number of the folk involved in organising the event expressed uncertainty as to whether they would be able to make it. The weather conditions in the early afternoon were poor, so it seemed wise to make a decision at that point. No doubt, there will be different opinions on whether the right call was made. My impression, rightly or wrongly, was that most of the folk I consulted were very cool about the prospect. I'm really sorry that it hasn't taken place too.
