PROVERBS OF CHOICE!

We looked at Proverbs 1 this morning. I made the request during the service that everyone, whether individually or as part of a family group or homegroup, take a look at the book of Proverbs this week and chose a proverb that is meaningful for you/them. I am hopeful that the chosing will involve a discussion across generations and within family units.I would be grateful if you could record the proverb of your choice in the comments section of this blog. It would be helpful if you could add your name to the proverb, and if you want to say why the proverb stands out for you, that would be great too. I hope to take the various proverbs chosen and incorporate them into the opening time of worship next Sunday morning.

I have always loved Proverbs 11:1.
In the OT silver was weighed on scales balanced against a stone weight. Weights with dishonest labels were used for cheating!

When I was 9/10 years old and visited the butchers shop to buy sausages or mince for my mother, I stood with eyes at counter level and watched fascinated as the butcher would place his left hand under the scale plate and push up on it to increase the weight of the purchase, thereby cheating his customers.

In life, I was taught to be honest and subsequently taught my children and grandchildren that honesty is indeed the best policy.

Proverbs 16:3 is meaningful to me.As I have tried to deal with complex problems in life, without result,I learned to take my problems to the Lord and then everything comes together. Hence the value of "Lean not on your own understanding."

3:5-6 is good, anchoring us to God's knowledgeand wisdom. Later in that chapter, there's more reference to wisdom as "she".

Sorry to write so late and so briefly - writing via iPhone and patchy signal!

My proverb of choice is from chapter 6 v6. 'Go to the ant you sluggard, consider its ways and be wise'. I really like the way it points to one of the smallest of God's creepy crawlies to illustrate that wisdom isn't the preserve of bishops, priests or Church of Scotland ministers. The ant is resourceful, great at team work, diligent, strong and prepared. God's creation is a fantastic tutor of wisdom and Solomon tuned in to that (1 Kings 4:33). I also like the call to 'consider' which is something that takes effort. The picture of a large human being being taught a lesson in wisom by one of the smallest roving the earth is in tune with the great reversal elsewhere is scripture. Everytime I see an ant this proverb isn't far from my thoughts (and I have a colony in my greenhouse at the moment!).

Didn't make church on Sunday Duncan, sorry to have missed it, so not even sure what you were teaching on.

When I think of Proverbs, I automatically think of Chapter 3:1-6. I find these verses very comforting and peaceful. I especially love the imagery of verse 3. Everytime I read these verses they redirect my thinking, just to trust God. It is so simple.

If you read on in chapter 3, verses 13-18 are also amazing. For me they evoke so many beautiful, peaceful images.

We have chosen Proverbs 10:12
“Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs” as a focus for the Light House this week. We chose it because it particularly resonates with a prayer that we have continually on display in the Light house kitchen…
"Jesus be with me as I begin this day.Guide my actions, help me through the difficulties, inspire me to love. Amen"
Such love is shown by the various folk who have come forward and volunteered to help at the Light house. Thank you :)
