We're open Mondays!

Light House Announcement!

Just to let everyone know that starting this week, Monday 31 August, the Light House café will now also be open Mondays as well as the usual Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 3.30pm.
Look forward to seeing you there!
Blessings!
Gwen

LUNCH for CHRIS

Chris Watt's time with us as a Youth Worker offically comes to an end this weekend. After the morning service there will be a pot luck lunch to celebrate Chris' many achievements among us. We hope as many folk as possible will be able to come along and share in this time together.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Angus MacInnes reaches the ripe young age of 40 this weekend. He has been an acting Inspector with Northern Constabulary in Shetland over the last few months and takes up a permanent post in Thurso in the autumn. Happy birthday Angus!

Highlanders 'feel they must go'

Here's an interesting study commissioned by HIE. A spokesman commented that "we have, in proportion to the Scottish average, 25% fewer people aged 15 to 30." Like many congregations in the Highlands, we are at a time of year, when we see some of our youth moving away for further education and employment. It will be interesting to see what impact a new campus in Inverness for the University of the Highlands will have on this demographic deficit.

GREENBELT

For many years I have wanted to go to Greenbelt, but for a variety of reasons I have never quite made it. This afternoon I am catching the Easy Jet flight to Bristol and then a bus to Cheltenham. Iwona Grant's brother is driving with a group all the way from Poland, so in comparison my journey is very short! Greenbelt takes place on Cheltenham race course with the majority of the participants camping. Let's hope the weather is better down there than it is here!
The programme for the weekend is quite bewildering in its size and variety. I'm taking my camera, so I'll post some pictures when I get back. Off to pack the rucsack now!

HILTON GOLF CHALLENGE 2009

The 6th anual Hilton golf challenge took place this evening at Torvean Golf Club. The course was in outstanding condition and over 30 players took on the course and the elements. There was some rain, but it could have been a lot worse! The best junior was Ross Martin, in the ladies section, Shona MacPherson, Mairi Ross and Aileen Thomson all shared the same top score, but the overall top scorer and winner of the Quiach was Ronnie Archer. It was a great evening. The golf played at Torvean followed by a bbq in the Light house is an ideal combination. We hope to hold the 7th golf challenge in June 2010. A big thank you to Iain and Mairi Ross for their outstanding organisation and to Gwen and Michelle for outstanding post match hospitality in the Light house.

CHRISTIANS IN SPORT

Here is news of an exciting new initiative starting in Inverness.
Dear parents/guardians and youth leaders

Re: Inverness Pray Play Say (PPS) group

For those of you who are new to Christians in Sport, these monthly PPS groups exist all over the UK and are designed for young Christian sports players, from across a region, to meet together and to be supported and equipped to represent Christ and make him known in the world of sport. For more information on CIS activities in Scotland please check the link below: http://www.christiansinsport.org.uk/main/connect-get-involved/scotland
What is the purpose of a Pray Play Say group?Key volunteers from Christians in Sport’s youth department host the evening which is designed to:
Equip – During the first hour of a typical meeting, through using the ‘Pray, Play, Say… The Youth Way’ book as a guideline, young people will be taught from the Bible and have time to pray together for friends who aren’t Christians. Encourage – A source of encouragement once a month with like-minded young people. It will be an opportunity for your young people to make friends and to grow together in their faith and representation of Jesus. Excel – Half of the evening will be given over to playing competitive team sport. We will enjoy some quality sports action together as we learn to play in a way that honours God.
Dates for school year 2009-2010:All regular groups take place on Thursday evenings at Millburn Academy (Diriebught Road, Inverness, IV2 3QR) from 7.30-9.30pm. Outreach events will be held at an alternative location (more details to follow). The target age group is secondary school age (1st-6th year).

September 17th
October 29th
December 3rd
January 28th
March 11th
April 17th - One Day Sports Plus Camp, Auchterarder Sports Facilities
June 10th
July 11th-16th – Sports Plus Camp, Loretto School, Musselburgh

Young people should come dressed to play sport, bring a bible, £2 and the attached parent consent form completed.

Where do the outreach events fit in?The world of sport is a tough environment for young people to communicate the good news of Jesus to their friends. The sports outreach events are designed to encourage an evangelistic outlook for the young people that attend the regular Thursday group, while providing them with an opportunity to invite friends/team-mates to a welcoming and fun environment in which the gospel will be clearly and relevantly presented.More information?Contact Matt Alexander (Group Leader) on 07531717337, malexander84@googlemail.com or Kirsten Ross (Scottish National Coordinator for Christians in Sport) on 07921 057825, kirsten@christiansinsport.org.uk

THE CHANGING FACE OF SHOPPING!

As a very infrequent visitor to the City Centre, I have had my fair share of being caught out by the changes taking place. Last year I encountered problems in M&S when I couldn't find the escalators! They had been moved during the previous year. This week it was Waterstones in the High Street. I went there to get a book, only to discover that the shop is now a Bank! Waterstones has moved to the Eastgate Centre.
Change is a fixed reality in all of our lives. Some of it is gradual and some of it is very sudden and unexpected. The church too is faced by the challenge of change and how to respond to it, and as a leadership we were thinking about this last Saturday with the help of an excellent book called THE MISSIONAL LEADER. In the face of radical and discontinuous change, many churches have just carried on doing the same things and the consequences are there for all to see. TML is a helpful book in stimulating thoughts and ideas as to how Christian leaders can "cultivate an enviroment in which the Spirit given presence of God's future may emerge among the people of God" It's not a light read, but it's the kind of book that will help you to see the reality of the challenges facing the Church today, as well as painting a very positive picture of how to respond.

COMPASSION

Compassion is a charity which many people in Hilton Church support. Each year in September there is a specific Sunday when the opportunity to radically change a child's life propects is highlighted. Why not take a look at the website and learn a little about this wonderful work.

Here are the latest photos received from Robyn. This is what the Bana Trust is all about! How wonderful to see these smiling faces.

GARDEN PROGRESS

Steve has been steadily working away in the Light house garden. It is really beginning to take shape, after all the upheaval caused by the redevelopment. It was good to see Morag macritchie there too yesterday, helping to plant some shrubs.

A PRAYER FOR RAMADAN

With the furore over the release of Megrahi continuing, I came across this prayer written by Brian MacLaren. So much of the focus in my readings this week has been on prayer and asking God. Perhaps if we prayed more and talked less.It seemed a fitting prayer for church today.

A BABY BOY

Great news from Mike and Laura Robertson:
Laura gave birth to a substantial 9lb 12oz Baby Boy at around 5:15am this morning (saturday) following a ten hour labour. We have decided to call him Joseph..... They should be getting home tomorrow or Monday at the latest.

the Gospel in 10 Words or Less

Here's a challenge to make you think. I especially liked this comment about the challenge.
"So what’s with the reduction to ten words? My first reaction to this exercise is concern that the good news spoken and lived by Jesus and his people is being reduced to one sentence to meet the obsession with conciseness honed in an era of modernism. I can imagine Jesus sighing and asking, “Why does this generation ask me for a ten word sentence? I tell you the truth, not one ten word sentence will be given to it.” He’d then get in the boat and head off somewhere to spend time with people listening to and telling stories, doing life and thinking of all the ten word sentences that might give some insight into the Kingdom of God. He comes back, and when asked by Peter if he has a ten word sentence, he responds by saying ten times ten, Peter, and more."

MERCY

The Justice Secretary clearly had an impossible choice to make. Opinions this morning are sharply divided. Personally, I was profoundly moved by the statement made by Mr MacAskill yesterday. To exercise that kind of compassion to a man guilty of such an atrocity.
Our justice system demands that judgment be imposed but compassion be available.

"Our beliefs dictate that justice be served, but mercy be shown.

"Compassion and mercy are about upholding the beliefs that we seek to live by, remaining true to our values as a people. No matter the severity of the provocation or the atrocity perpetrated.
I'm sure much will be written about this act of mercy.Last night, it was being said that it would define the Scotish Governments term of office. An act of almost outragesous mercy and compassion wouldn't be a bad way to be remembered.More of the statement appears below.
"Having met the criteria, it therefore falls to me to decide whether Mr Al Megrahi should be released on compassionate grounds.

"I am conscious that there are deeply held feelings, and that many will disagree whatever my decision. However a decision has to be made.

"Scotland will forever remember the crime that has been perpetrated against our people and those from many other lands. The pain and suffering will remain forever. Some hurt can never heal. Some scars can never fade.

"Those who have been bereaved cannot be expected to forget, let alone forgive. Their pain runs deep and the wounds remain.

"However, Mr Al Megrahi now faces a sentence imposed by a higher power. It is one that no court, in any jurisdiction, in any land, could revoke or overrule. It is terminal, final and irrevocable. He is going to die.

"In Scotland, we are a people who pride ourselves on our humanity.

"It is viewed as a defining characteristic of Scotland and the Scottish people.

"The perpetration of an atrocity and outrage cannot and should not be a basis for losing sight of who we are, the values we seek to uphold, and the faith and beliefs by which we seek to live.

"Mr Al Megrahi did not show his victims any comfort or compassion. They were not allowed to return to the bosom of their families to see out their lives, let alone their dying days. No compassion was shown by him to them.

"But that alone is not a reason for us to deny compassion to him and his family in his final days.

"Our justice system demands that judgment be imposed but compassion be available.
"Our beliefs dictate that justice be served, but mercy be shown.

"Compassion and mercy are about upholding the beliefs that we seek to live by, remaining true to our values as a people. No matter the severity of the provocation or the atrocity perpetrated.

"For these reasons - and these reasons alone - it is my decision that Mr Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, convicted in 2001 for the Lockerbie bombing, now terminally ill with prostate cancer, be released on compassionate grounds and allowed to return to Libya to die."

LOCH NESS BAPTISMS

Last summer , Martin and Michelle were baptised at Dores Beach. This Sunday, Ronnie and Martin are being baptised at 2.30pm. The baptisms will go ahead whatever the weather, but if it's a good day, we hope folk will take along a picnic and make an afternoon of it. Hope to see you there.

THE LIGHT HOUSE

St Columba's New Charge Development

Last night Murray MacCheyne and I were at a training event with Peter Neilson for the establishment of a new Church on the sourthern edge of Inverness. St Columba High Church in the centre of the city will be closing down at some point in the future, and a new outreach will be established. Murray and I are part of team of 7 called a Commission, who have the responsibility for taking this vision forward. It's a really exciting opportunity for a group of local Christians, to work out what kind of a Church ( don't just think building!) will be able to communicate the radical life and good news about Jesus to a new part of town. Murray is the secretary of the Commission, so hopefully he will keep you posted on the developments as they happen. We would certainly value your prayers for wisdom and insight over the coming months.

HARVEST PLENTIFUL, WORKERS FEW!

Our reading last night at the Board meeting came from Luke 10 where Jesus observed that the harvest is plentiful , but the workers are few. The principle seems to hold good across many aspects of congregational life. Despite the numbers involved in Hilton Parish Church, (and making the needs known over several months), we are really struggling at the moment to find people who are able/willing to share their gifts in finance and administration. If you are reading this, and feel that you have gifts in finance or administration that you would like to offer to God through Hilton Church, just email me at duncan@hiltonchurch.freeserve.co.uk

1000 POSTS

Chris' u tube post had the distinction of being the 1000th post since this blog began in 2007. The blog's purpose was to tell the story of what is happening within the life of our Church. With an average of 400 posts per annum, there is plenty to write about at Hilton Church. Tonight we have a Light house management team meeting at 7pm, followed by a Congregational Board meeting at 8pm. If anything of note emerges from these meetings, we'll blog about it here.

LOCHNAGAR

What a beautiful country we live in. A few photos from a recent trip to Lochnagar.

LIGHT HOUSE VOLUNTEERS

Due to a combination of staff illness and holidays, it has been a challenge to keep the Light house cafe running efficiently over the past few weeks. Through this blog, I wanted to highlight the sterling work done by some of our teenage volunteers. Becki, Keri, Eilidh and Fiona (sorry if I have forgotten anybody else)together with a Canadian team were all fantastic, but the stand out volunteer was Tom Barlow who has been helping nearly every day for the last 3 weeks. What a great job he has done along with Gwen. Thank you Tom! The Light house is always on the look out for willing volunteers. If you can help, please drop in and have a word with Gwen.

THE BEST HOLIDAY CLUB EVER!

At the end of each Olympic Games (with the exception of Atlanta 1996), The President of the IOC would declare that this has been the best ever Olympics.
IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch declared at the (Sydney) Closing Ceremony "I am proud and happy to proclaim that you have presented to the world the best Olympic Games ever."
It's always difficult to make any objective assessment of these matters. What we can declare with some confidence at Hilton Church is that Chris Watt along with his team of volunteers has led a quite exceptional holiday club. The holiday club service was jam packed this morning, and in my personal opinion, it was the best holiday club service I have ever been too! Thank you and well done to all the team members.

Holiday Club Photos taken By Arnold Maniquiz (the guy in the Elvis wig)

HILTON'S GOT TALENT!

Showstoppers Holiday Club held there very own "Hilton's got talent" last night. A large crowd turned out for the event. The children and leaders performing all excelled themselves. There was also a surprise contribution from the local boy band North Life which "brought the house down". I have it on good authority that North Life will be creating history at the 10 am morning service by performing for the last time in their short but illustrious career. A performance not to be missed!

LENT 2010

In 2007, a significant number of folk in Hilton Church followed Maggi Dawn's Beginnings and Endings. In November 2009, Giving it Up, a series of Readings and reflections for Lent is being published. I intend to follow it through Lent 2010.

SUTHERLAND LANDSCAPES

On a wet and dismal day, its good to remember the days when the sun was shining this summer. . I had such a day climbing Ben Loyal, near Tongue in Sutherland.

A QUESTION!

I am currently re-reading "LEADERSHIP NEXT - changing leaders in a changing culture" by Eddie Gibbs. The following question by Eddie is worth reflecting on:

Every local congregation should ask this question: If the Lord were to remove us overnight from our neighbourhood, in what ways would the surrounding community become aware that we were nolonger in their midst?

THE STATE AND SCRIPTURE

This morning we were reflecting on nation state leadership. Can a nation be led in a way which leads towards peace rather than enmity. If time had allowed this morning, I would have shown the following slide show. John Drane has an interesting commentary on this.

OH HAPPY DAY!

This is a day for celebration at Hilton Church. Isabel Waite and Fiona Hutchison are publicly professing faith in Christ and joining the church later this morning. It's a thrill to see these teenage girls taking this important step in their lives. We don't really live in the kind of culture where many people make this kind of commitment anymore. In a previous generation everybody joined the church. We seem to have swung to the opposite end of the spectrum in recent years. Perhaps its something we need to think about afresh.Steve Taylor in his blog, outlines some of the reasons why membership of a church is such an important aspect of discipleship.
