Update from Laurence and Mairi

The vernacular greeting Kiruka omwaka is more of a congratulation on having completed the year that has past, rather than an anticipatory felicitation for the year that is to come. In that greeting alone there is a cultural gulf before one can arrive at Happy New Year, as expressed in the European futuristic paradigm.
